Mixed Media: collage and glazes
Skin of Time inspired students to "hide" and "cover" messages and symbols in their work. The glazes allow some images to show through.
First Step: Collaging
Inspired by "We" and "Skin of Time", these students are doing the first step of their Mixed Media painting.

INSPIRED...then getting their hands dirty!!!!
Inspired by A-MAZE-ING LAUGHTER and Echoes, these students use their creative ideas to transform their three pounds of clay into something EXTRAORDINARY
Amazing New objects!
Students start with simple cylinders and then must create something extraordinary. Inspired by "Echoes", they begin stamping designs, adding pieces, changes shapes, and creating amazing new objects!
Expression and an Extraordinary Idea
Gaziz has created a very unique spear. His extraordinary idea began as a simple ceramic stick. His inspiration came from "Echoes"
Kseniya wants her mask to express the emotion of satisfaction. Her inspiration came from the laughing figures on Denman Ave: "A-MAZE-ING LAUGHTER"
Expression and an Extraordinary Idea
Students are hard at work with their ceramic sculptures. Inspiration has come from "A-MAZE-ING LAUGHTER" for Domenica who is making a mask with expression and emotion. Gabriel is creating an enormous mug that began as a simple, boring cylinder. His inspiration comes form "Echoes". He wants to transform something ordinary into something extraordinary.

MEETING
What can be gained from collaboration?
If you work together, in a team, you will do better work and have more ideas.
"Juan Paulo and Rox"
How important are sharing and trying to understand each other?
To understand each other is the main part of life. We need to share ideas and create something important.

The Tour
The good weather made the tour much more enjoyable than what could have been. It was cold, but students were good sports about it. They looked at the sculptures, touched them, and photographed them. The view surrounding the art was spectacular so photos were even more creatively planned. The tour took three hours and students were back by 12:00. They said the next day that it was interesting and enjoyable.
In class, students worked in pairs to answer thought provoking questions about each sculpture they saw. Upcoming posts will highlight the best answers.

Field Trip Preparation
On Jan 17, the students were introduced to the Vancouver Biennale Sculptures around Vancouver through a power point presentation. The Vancouver Biennale is a non-profit organization that supports the installation of monumental sculptures by emerging global artists. The 2009-2011 Biennale pursues the theme of “in-transit-ion” with an emphasis on our society and how it is culturally diverse, fast-paced, has changing attitudes.
Students were hopefully inspired by photos of the sculptures and the Big Ideas associated with them. A question was given to them with each photo that was to generate dialogue about each of the sculptures and get them thinking about what they mean. In the next 6 weeks the idea connected to each sculpture will be the idea that will be used to create new art.
On Jan 19th, students were taken on a bus tour of 10 of the sculptures in the Kitsilano, Beach Ave, Coal Harbour areas. Prior to the tour, my husband and I drove the route and visited each the 10 sculptures I was going to show my students. It was a gorgeous day and I was very impressed with the art we saw. Parking was a huge issue(we went on a Sunday) and I hoped that it would be less difficult for the Bodwell Bus driver. I mapped out the route for him and circled possible parking places.
